Hello! I’m Steph – owner and hand dyer of Perran Yarns.

I specialize in hand-dyeing luxury yarns from my dedicated studio near the beautiful shores of Perranporth, Cornwall. Behind the scenes, I handle everything: the dyeing, the marketing, the website, and the shipping. Because I manage every step of the process personally, you can rest assured that whenever you get in touch, you’re speaking with me.

At Perran Yarns, my focus is on luxury bases brought to life with hand-dyed, wearable colourways. Living on the breath-taking Perranporth coast is my greatest inspiration; the shifting tides and stunning coastal landscapes find their way into every skein and pattern I design.

Our yarns and original kits are designed to be a delight from start to finish. You’ll enjoy a meditative making experience, resulting in a soft, comfortable garment that effortlessly complements your existing wardrobe.

Luxurious yarn bases

Because I’ve lived with sensitive, eczema-prone skin my whole life, softness isn’t just a preference for me—it’s a requirement. Life is far too short to spend hours crafting with scratchy fibres! I believe that if you’re investing the time to hand-dye or hand-knit a project, you should start with the finest natural yarns. This ensures your finished piece isn’t just a one-of-a-kind treasure, but a luxury that feels incredible against your skin.

I specialize in sourcing sumptuous, hard-to-find yarn bases that invite you to discover something new. My collection features rare natural fibre blends you may have never encountered before—think indulgent combinations of merino, silk, and baby alpaca, alongside specialty fibres like tencel, seacell, and baby camel. I hand-pick these luxurious bases to ensure your next project is as unique as it is beautiful.

Why choose hand-dyed?

The beauty of hand-dyeing lies in its unpredictability. Whether I’m creating a tonal semi-solid or a beautiful variegated palette, every skein is a unique work of art. Because the colours shift subtly within each batch, no two are ever exactly alike – giving your project a depth and exclusivity that machine-dyed yarns simply can’t match.

Dye pot of yarns in colourway Waterworld

My signature style focuses on the beauty of variation, whether through multi-coloured variegated skeins or semi-solids with delicate tonal shifts. Because I believe these subtle nuances give hand-dyed yarn its soul, I utilize a range of different dyeing methods to ensure every batch has its own unique, handcrafted personality.

Each of my yarns is individually hand-painted, kettle-dyed, or dip-dyed in very small batches for ultimate quality control. I use professional acid dyes (the acidity coming from locally-produced food-grade white vinegar) to guarantee that your yarn’s beautiful tones remain vibrant and reliable for years to come.

I’ve been hand-dyeing yarns since 2006, and even after all that time, I’m still filled with a sense of wonder. I never tire of the beautiful, unexpected tones and shades that emerge from the dye pot – each batch still feels like a little piece of magic.

My palettes are inspired by a kaleidoscope of influences – from the seasonal shifts of the Cornish landscape to my favourite treats and upcoming fashion trends. However, my primary goal is always wearability. I believe a colourway should look just as stunning worked into your finished garment as it does twisted in the skein.

Custom dye orders

I love bringing your specific visions to life through custom dyeing.

Whether you’re looking for a perfect match for a wedding dress, a favourite piece of clothing, or even a specific shade from a paint swatch (or a favourite food!), I can dye your chosen yarn base to meet your needs. I’m always happy to offer expert advice if you’re unsure which yarn to choose.

Best of all, custom orders are priced the same as my standard dyelots – the cost simply depends on your chosen base and the technique required to achieve your dream finish.
