What will you need?
So what do you need to make this your next project? The Cligga Cowl is designed to be a one-skein project, making it as budget-friendly as it is stylish.
Materials
Yarn (choose either the DK or 4ply version):
– DK version: 100g Perran Yarns DK Tibetan (merino/silk/yak) yarn, or other DK yarn with approx. 212 metres (232 yards); pictured above in colourway Ocean Blue
– 4ply version: 100g Perran Yarns 4ply Fleck (merino) yarn, or other 4ply yarn with approx. 400 metres (437 yards) or more; pictured below in colourway Precious Metals
Hook: 4mm (US G/6) crochet hook or size needed to obtain gauge
Notions: Tapestry needle for weaving in ends, and scissors
Abbreviations (UK Terms)
I’ve used standard UK crochet terminology for this pattern, with US terms in brackets:
ch: chain
sl st: slip stitch
tr: treble crochet ( = US dc: double crochet)
fantail: 4tr, 3ch, 1tr into same stitch
if you’re not familiar with any of these stitches, make sure you practise with some waste yarn first.
Tips for crocheting the Cligga Cowl
Tip 1: The Tension/Gauge Check
Approx. 3.5 fantails = 10cm (4in) wide
Note: The tension/gauge isn’t “make-or-break” for a cowl like it is for a fitted garment like a sweater. However it will affect your finished size and how much yarn you use. If you’re a tight crocheter, consider jumping up half a hook size to keep that beautiful drape!
Tip 2: A note on construction
The Cligga Cowl is crocheted back and forth in rows – which are also joined as rounds as you go! This gives a completely reversible finish.
The initial chain is NOT joined before working the first row. After working the first row, you will have a gap at the base of the cowl.
You will close this gap when sewing the yarn ends in at the end of the project. The image sequence below shows you the steps to do this.
